If you’re looking for a volunteer opportunity this Earth Day–that’s Saturday, April 22 for those who don’t know–Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful (KTBB) has you covered. From 9 AM to noon, KTBB will be hosting The Great American Cleanup, a tremendous effort to pick up as much litter around the Bay Area as possible in honor of Earth Day, our environment, and our community.

KTBB will be hosting at numerous sites around Tampa, so people are able to volunteer at whatever site is convenient. Also, those with boats or other water transport equipment are able to bring their vehicles to help clean up Tampa’s waterways.

While soft gloves and water will be provided, KTBB recommends that volunteers bring heavier gloves if they own them, as well protection from the sun like sunscreen or a hat. Also, open-toed shoes are a must. They will not provide you with shoes if…

Equestrian Inc.

Rated five out of five by Greatnonprofits.org, Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to rescuing abandoned, abused, unwanted, and slaughter-bound horses and providing a rehabilitation sanctuary for these animals. But taking care of  dozens of horses is no easy task, so Equestrian Inc. is always looking for volunteers to help out.

To volunteer with this organization you must a love and respect for horses, as well as “get it done attitude”. If you have that, you’re pretty much ready to go. All you need to do is attend a volunteer orientation, the date and time of which can be found on Equestrian Inc.’s events page. It can be difficult to get out and volunteer when being active is not really your thing. But just because you hate getting off the couch doesn’t mean you can’t help those in need.

Crisis Text Line provides free, nationwide, 24/7 support for people in crisis, and it is all done through text messaging. This service is available because of volunteer crisis counselors who answer texts from people crisis and calm them down through active listening, collaborative problem solving, and safety planning.

While this is an extremely important responsibility, volunteer crisis counselors have it kind of easy. They don’t need to leave their home to do it. They don’t even need to get out of bed if they don’t want to! Who wouldn’t want to do good work straight from the comfort of their own bed?

That notion is represented by Eckerd Kids, a nonprofit founded in 1968 by Jack and Ruth Eckerd that is dedicated to helping kids succeed in trying situations. Their mission is to provide solutions and services that promote the well-being of children and families in need.

There are plenty of ways to get involved with Eckerd Kids, from becoming a volunteer to adopting or fostering a child in need of a home. Individuals can also donate any amount of money to help the program keep its services and programs running.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to help those struggling with cancer, this is your chance. The Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation is looking for volunteers for their Patient Support volunteer program who want to make a positive difference the lives of cancer patients. Ideal candidates are cancer survivors or those who have cared for cancer patients in the past, but it is not a requirement; anyone with a good heart and a desire to do good would be just as welcome.

Some responsibilities for volunteers are to give emotional support to patients undergoing cancer treatment, offer snacks or beverages to patients or their guests, and share reading material with patients. This year’s Day of Caring, an annual event put on by United Way Suncoast, will be on October 12, and while it may seem like a long time from now, it is time to start planning.

United Way’s Day of Caring is a day for workplaces all over Tampa Bay to form volunteer teams and do something special for the community. Businesses and organizations across DeSoto, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pinellas, and Sarasota counties participate in Day of Caring, which helps coworkers from participating workplaces to bond over service that helps the community as a whole.

This year will put teams to work on projects that most nonprofits could not accomplish alone. Also, teams may choose what type of service they want to do, but no matter what they choose, the workplace volunteers will make a great impact on building a better Suncoast region.

The Spring of Tampa Bay is the Department of Children and Families (DCF) certified Domestic Violence Center for Hillsborough County, and has provided sanctuary and services to more than 60,000 abused children and adults since 1977. This organizations programs and services help victims of domestic violence rebuild their lives while raising awareness to prevent domestic violence from occurring.

The Spring also offers a 24-hour crisis hotline, a 128-bed emergency shelter, and outreach services. This organization does amazing work for those in need, and you can be involved too.

While this might not be an ordinary volunteer opportunity, it is a great chance to really help those affected by domestic violence.
