Here is another great opportunity for those who have an interest in education and working with children. ReadingPals is a United Way program that aims to improve the reading skills of kids from kindergarten through third grade and to impart a love for reading.
Between one third and one half of kindergarten students enter school with a reading deficit, and 88 percent of first graders reading below grade level will continue to read below grade level in fourth grade. This trend continues on to high school, where those students that struggled to read in fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out. The reason this happens is that from kindergarten to third grade, kids are learning to read; but from fourth grade and up, kids are reading to learn.
